George Soros: Billionaire, Philanthropist, Political Activist

George Soros is a self-made billionaire who has recently appeared often in headlines due to his strong opinions against Donald Trump. He is an outspoken liberal and progressive and uses his wealth to support political causes and philanthropies. As a young man he fled his home country of Hungary to London where he studied economics and got his start in finance. He later moved to New York where he worked on Wall Street and started his own hedge fund. Soros is sometimes referred to as the man who broke the Bank of England due to his financial gains from betting that the British pound and other European currencies were valued too highly, according to Forbes Magazine.

Soros is founder of the Open Society Foundations, one of the largest non-profit organizations in the world. The organization supports a wide variety of causes including Ebola research, global human rights, and democratic policies. This organization recently received publicity for its progressive, generous parental leave policy. According to Forbes.com, all of the organization’s employees are eligible for six months of parental leave, half of that with full pay. This breaks the mold in the U.S. where parental leave offered by companies tends to be minimal or does not exist. Some other large organizations, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Google, are now following suit.

In 2016, during the months of an escalating refugee crisis where thousands of refugees were fleeing from North Africa and the Middle East to Europe, Soros pledged $500 million of his non-profit’s funds toward this issue. He directed this money toward job opportunities for migrants, primarily in Europe, according to Forbes.com. He has contributed to various organizations supporting immigrants over the years.

George Soros has spent much of his own money to influence reform of the American justice system. According to Politico.com, he has contributed to several campaigns for district attorneys in different states, an influential position in the justice system that has historically been dominated by Caucasians. His money has backed candidates who share his views of racial equality in sentencing and emphasizing treatment for drug offenders instead of punishment.

Soros is known for being outspoken about his political views. He has responded strongly to Donald Trump’s efforts to deport and block immigrants, reflecting on his personal experiences fleeing Hungary. According to Politico.com, he compared Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric to the terrorist acts of ISIS. He is the founder of the Democratic Alliance, a group of wealthy liberals who seek to promote and defend the left in American politics. He made major financial contributions to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
