Have you ever heard about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, two journalists that became an overnight sensation? 2007 was when it all began, bringing the duo to the global limelight. Lacey and Larkin, who have been journalists since 1972 had it rough when they met head to head with Joe Arpaio.
Arpaio, the Maricopa County sheriff at the time had since his appointment two decades earlier subjected Latinos and immigrants to a lot of huts. Joe’s actions from the very beginning had angered the world and that is why there were many complaints lodged against him. Arpaio, from the get-go, had made the courtroom his home as he was trying to hide behind the legal system.
Little did Joe know that one day two journalists would unveil the rotten tomato of Maricopa County. Lacey and Larkin, in one of their popular editorials, had covered a story on the sheriff, a move that made Arpaio rage with fury. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter and Jim Larkin | Facebook
Joe, with the help of his loyal commandoes, arrested the duo in their homes all in the cover of darkness. Jim and Michael were later on released after twenty-four days in jail and it is from there that they presented their case against the county in court. The court battle that had begun six years earlier ended in 2013 when the judge and the jury ruled in favor of the two journalists.
The court later awarded the duo with over three million dollars, money they chose to use in setting up the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. The organization, since its establishment, has been a beacon of hope to all those people who suffered at the hands of Joe Arpaio.
So impressive has the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund been that it has helped dozens of innocent immigrants facing deportation charges crush the cases.
The organization, which also supports its affiliates financially, has been able to help minority groups build their lives from scratch. In short, Jim and Larkin have single-handedly carried the people of Arizona on their shoulders.
Were it not for the duo, then the innocent immigrants of Arizona would have perished in the hands of dictators like Arpaio. Joe, unfortunately, has in the recent year been a guest of the state, having gotten found guilty of abuse of office. However, President Donald Trump who gets known as a liberal man later in the year granted Arpaio his freedom. Recall, Trump and Joe have some distinct similarities.
Jim and Michael might at the moment feel scared, but never broken. The duo still has more than enough gas left in the tank, the energy they will use to push the likes of Arpaio to the dungeons. Michael and Jim, who had temporarily downed their tools when they formed the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, have since resumed their journalistic duties, as they want to fight the battle from the forefront.
Finally, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey now run a website, a digital segment that allows them to maintain touch with the rest of the world and at the same time promote the freedom of speech.
